Last week, one of our Sophisticated Prepsters Robin-Birdd had a chance to check out one of San Francisco's Dine About Town Restaurants Roka Akor. Dine About Town occurs twice a year during SF's restaurant week, featuring 3-course dinners for $36.95, and 2-3-course lunches for $18.95-- almost a 25% off discount on regularly priced menu items. Read on to see images of a few savory dishes taken by our Sophisticated Foodie..
Sandwiched between North Beach and the Financial District, Roka Akor is nicely tucked away in a corner brick building along with a few cute high end interior design firms and art dealers.
Opposite of its hard exterior, the interior is composed of pure warmth and vibrancy. Tones of pink and orange linger throughout the restaurant, reminding us of a sophisticated tropical vacation. The kitchen is fully open, giving customers a glimpse into how their dishes are being created.
As we sat down to order, we notice how organized and efficient the restaurant staff is. The waiters constantly refill our glasses, and since each staff member is required to taste every item on the menu, their opinions on various dishes are real and honest. Keeping Asmbly Hall in mind, we paired our favorite pieces from the store with some of the dishes we savored that night...
HAMACHI SERRANO CHILI ROLL
WHITE ASPARAGUS and YUZU
These two appetizers remind us very much of Blade + Blue's Forest Green plaid tie. The mix of green on white with a hint of orange from the yuzu sauce matches fairly well back to this tie.
PRIME BEEF FILET
CHILI GINGER SAUCE
This first entree brings to mind another Blade + Blue piece, the Brian plaid flannel. The quality of the beef along with the 24+ hour simmered chili ginger sauce brings wonders to your pallet! The brown hues mixed with the heavy goodness of the prime beef filet makes us think of the Brian flannel.
YUZU MISO MARINATE BLACK COD
JAPANESE MAGNOLIA LEA
This entree is plated very beautifully. The Yuzu Miso sauce is intentionally smeared with a sprinkle of sesame seeds, similar to an impressionist painting that is very sophisticated.
This type of sophistication reminds us very much of Everly's new Spring collection.
Colors of peaches and light pink tones pair perfectly with the picketed red onions,
buttery hues of the black cod and creamy miso sauce.
WARM VALRHONA CHOCOLATE CAKE WITH SIGHTGLASS ESPRESSO ICE CREAM
This warm but cool dessert just melts in your mouth. The espresso colors flow from black coffee tones to a fluffy marshmallow like goodness. This dessert is beyond sophisticated, in the same way that
YUZU AND FRESH BERRY PAVLOVA
This dessert's mix of crunchy (from the pavlova) smoothness is the life of the party! A perfect way to end the dinner. The vibrant raspberries topped with the darkness of the blackberries, smothered in the yuzu sauce and fluffy whip cream, pairs very well with our Blade + Blue brick red flannel tie.
We're glad we got to share our Dine About Town / ASMBLY HALL experience with you!
Be sure to come into the shop or visit us online to view any of these great pieces shown-- they're even more mouthwatering in person!
As you probably have seen on the streets, plaid is definitely in and has been the trend since the birth of the hipster, but what about the lumberjack plaid?? I guess the Brawny Man's fashion sense finally caught on, because the lumberjack plaid is all the rage! It's a type of plaid thats a bit more sophisticated than the average hipster on the street, we'd like to call it a Sophisticated Prepster look!!
Trendhunter.com's slideshow article "51 Modern Lumberjack Looks " provides excellent examples of that perfect Lumberjack look for all types of men. #1 on their list features a runway collection from fall 2013 by Duckie Brown, inspired by the oh so famous lumberjack plaid. Duckie Brown sure makes us look at lumberjacks in a very different way, a sophisticated way! Check out the slide show here: 51lumberjacklooks

Another mens trend we've had our eyes on is the paisley print. You may have seen this in the typical bandana/ "doo rag", but this unfading print is making a come back in the streetwear scene. Hypebeast did a good, informative article awhile back about the famous motorcycle, gang-inspired pattern. But before reaching the average American motorcycle gang's closet, the paisley print actually paved its way through history across the globe. According to Zach Pina from Hypebeast:
"The distinctive “twisted teardrop,” or mango-shaped design at the centerpiece of any paisley pattern is believed to be Indian or Iranian in origin — the latter of which has been known to have been using the design since the Sassanid Dynasty, which ended in 651 AD. Scholars agree that the pattern has long since been associated with Hinduism, but as for what it was inspired by, is still something of a mystery."
Popular brand of the shop GPPR shared their take on the historical paisley print with their Band Tee:
"Inspired by the “2 tone” movement of the 1970’s. The 2 tone movement originates from the musical genre "2 Tone", created in England in the late 1970s by fusing elements of ska, punk rock, rocksteady, reggae and pop. It was called 2 Tone because most of the bands were signed to the record label 2 Tone Records at some point (according to http://skascene.com/history.php), giving way to a whole movement of not only music but art, fashion and lifestyle."
Come into the shop to snag your very own paisley/ 2 tone movement inspired tee,
or pick one up at our online shop..
And be sure to stop in to check out our new Spring goodies as they start trickling into the shop, and online!
